Construction is happening at the Safety Village, with the infusion of a large state grant and the profits from the September fundraiser giving us a needed boost in funds.
Thanks to CWLP for digging trenches for electrical work. We are preparing the ground for the cement pour for sidewalks and the small pads for the small buildings. This will be done before winter sets in.
A new large sign is being ordered to replace the old Children's Safety Village sign on our property. The new sign will be very colorful, bright red and will be easily recognizable from 11th Street and to those entering the complex.
During the winter, we hope to get the electric wiring in the house of hazards and be prepared for the remainder of the interior construction, weather permitting.
Captain Bob's Schoolhouse is being used frequently for training by the Springfield Fire Department, the Secretary of State, the CERT and for Risk Watch education for children, among others. We receive a great many compliments about our facility, from the abundance of parking to the interior of the schoolhouse, which is so well set up for audio visual training aids.
To use the schoolhouse, contact Glenna Mason at 726-6122 or Captain Mark Dyment at 788-8428. We are happy to provide the facility for any educational forum.

Children from the Head Start program were bussed to the Safety Village on April 16 for safety education and fun. They received fire safety education from Springfield Fire Department Captain Rick Weber and stranger danger education from Deputy Martin Parker of the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office. The children were 3, 4, and 5 years old and were very attentive and inquisitive. They also enjoyed the playground.
The Children's Safety Village and Captain Bob's Schoolhouse are available for education at any time. Call Captain Mark Dyment at 788-8492 for arrangements.

The Children’s Safety Village construction has progressed significantly this past year with the addition of the house of hazards (safety house). The exterior is complete and interior construction will begin when the weather permits in the spring. When the safety house is completed, it will have functions for children to enter and experience first hand the dangers encountered in everyday living, such as exiting properly and the artificial smoke room.
Captain Bob’s Schoolhouse is in use with the Springfield Fire Department Public Education Officer in residence now and the schoolhouse is used for educational forums and meetings. Contact Glenna Mason at 726-6122 for information about having your meetings there.

The number one health risk of children of ages fourteen and under is not disease, kidnapping or drugs. It's Injuries! The statistics are staggering. Unintentional injuries from traffic accidents, drowning, fire, firearms and poisoning kill over 7,000 and permanently disable over 50,000 children each year in America—that's more than drugs and disease combined.
The Springfield Children's Safety Committee was formed to reduce the occurrence of preventable injuries through safety education. The committee is building a permanent facility adjacent to the UIS campus, called the Children's Safety Village, which will adequately support an injury prevention curriculum.
